After a successful first edition in 2024, the Sport Pride Amsterdam Chess Open will be held again on Sunday, July 27, from 11:00 to 17:00 CEST, at a special venue: Boom Chicago. The tournament is part of the Sport Pride Festival of Pride Amsterdam 2025 and is once again organized by the Sport Pride Foundation, the Amsterdam Chess Open Foundation, and De Queer Schaakclub. Participation is open to everyone, and all skill levels are welcome.
The tournament (you can register here) is part of the Sport Pride Festival, a series of sporting events during Pride Amsterdam, which will be held this year from July 26 to August 3, 2025. The Sport Pride Foundation also organizes the Sport Pride Conference (which will kick off World Pride '26), the Sport Pride Fitness Festival (with 10 gyms), and, for the first time, the Sport Pride Beach Water Polo Event in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Basketball Association (KNZB).
The Sport Pride Amsterdam Chess Open, a brand new, inclusive chess tournament, is a good fit for the festival and vice versa. On behalf of the ACO board, Marjolein Aarten said last year: “The Amsterdam Chess Open Foundation aims to contribute to diversity in the chess world. We would like chess enthusiasts of all genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds to find their way to the chessboard. That's why we're excited to participate.”
Rens Mors, founder of De Queer Schaakclub, was enthusiastic after the first tournament, which was a great experience: “I think it's a great success, especially because different groups come together. The players from traditional chess clubs mix well with the people from De Queer Schaakclub. You also notice that this event is accessible enough for people who normally find the step to traditional chess tournaments too big.”
Mors' club, founded in 2022, focuses on queer people, meaning anyone who doesn't fit into the 'standard' categories regarding gender and/or sexual orientation. After the first Sport Pride Amsterdam Chess Open, De Queer Schaakclub officially registered as a chess club with the KNSB (Royal Dutch Chess Federation) and the Schaakbond Groot-Amsterdam (SGA), and in its first season, the club promptly won the SGA Cup.
The second edition of the Sport Pride Amsterdam Chess Open will be held on Sunday, July 27th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Boom Chicago (Rozengracht 117, Amsterdam). The registration fee is €5. The games will be played at a 5+5 tempo (5 minutes + 5 seconds per move).
The game will be played in two rounds: a preliminary round and a final round. In the preliminary round, participants will be randomly assigned to groups. Final groups will be formed based on the results from the preliminary round. The top three of the final groups will receive a medal, and trophies will be awarded to the winners.
Registration is available here. There is room for a maximum of 80 participants. Will we see you on July 27th for a fun chess afternoon?
